ORCA is a marine conservation charity founded in 2001, dedicated to the long-term study and protection of whales, dolphins, and porpoises and their habitats worldwide. ORCA mission is to engage people from all backgrounds in safeguarding these marine species, ensuring the oceans remain a thriving environment for them.
With over 90 species of cetaceans facing threats such as overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change, ORCA focuses on identifying and protecting critical whale and dolphin habitats. They use trained volunteers and expert conservationists to monitor populations through surveys conducted on ferries, cruise ships and private boats, gathering essential data to support conservation efforts.
A key part of ORCA’s work is public engagement. Their Ocean Conservationists educate and inspire passengers aboard ships, allowing people to witness marine wildlife firsthand while also contributing to valuable research. ORCA also works closely with shipping partners to address the growing problem of ship strikes, where vessels collide with whales and dolphins, posing a serious risk to their survival.
Each year, ORCA publishes the State of Cetaceans report, providing a comprehensive overview of whale and dolphin populations based on extensive survey efforts across global oceans. This data is not only used for research but also to influence policy changes and advocate for stronger protections at international conservation forums.

AUGMENTUM, a dedicated supporter of environmental and marine conservation efforts, together with Seakeepers, is actively supporting ORCA’s mission. Through its commitment to protecting marine life, AUGMENTUM, throught its NEREIDE project, is helping ORCA continue its vital work in safeguarding vulnerable cetacean populations and preserving their habitats. This partnership strengthens efforts to create safer spaces for whales and dolphins while promoting the health of marine ecosystems.
By combining scientific research, public involvement, and policy advocacy, ORCA plays a crucial role in marine conservation, working to create a safer and healthier future for whales, dolphins, and their ecosystems.
